Add to basket[6] + 28pp., 12mo. In coloured illustrative wraps. Morris's illustrations are light and fresh, the first being a caricature of 'the enemy': a sour-looking bespectacled Japanese army officer. The first section, which it illustrates, is on 'Security' and concludes: 'Remember that in disposing of household effects, releasing servants from employment, etc., you may easily give away too much information. Be guarded; it is YOUR life too that is in danger this time.' The volume is entertainingly-written, and paints a vivid picture of the logistical niceties facing the British armed forces at the end of the war. One piece of advice, illustrated with another Morris cartoon, is: 'If you have a "double-barrelled" name, sink your pride and use one name only. You will not enjoy searching amongst piles of Baggage under two letters in the Customs Sheds on your arrival.' The pamphlet is divided into four sections: Preparations; Movement to the Port; Embarkation and the Voyage; Arrival in the United Kingdom. Subsections include: 'Vaccination Certificate', 'Pre-Censorship', 'Pets', 'Despatches from Stations in India', 'Clothing Coupons' and 'Ration Cards'. Scarce: no copy on COPAC or OCLC.

FIRST EDITION of the posthumously published journal by the captain who came closest to the site where Franklin's expedition ended. "In 1849 Collinson was appointed to command an expedition for the relief of Sir John Franklin, by way of the Bering Strait; he himself had command of the Enterprise, and with him was Commander Robert Le Mesurier McClure in the Investigator. The two ships sailed together from Plymouth on 20 January 1850 but unfortunately separated in the neighbourhood of Cape Horn and did not meet again. The Enterprise passed Point Barrow, Alaska, on 21 August, but the ice forced Collinson to return south and winter in Hong Kong. In 1851 he was again hampered by ice and in 1852 was frozen in at Cambridge Bay for the winter. In 1853 the Enterprise was caught in the ice at Camden Bay, and there passed a third winter. She reached Point Barrow on 8 August 1854, after being shut up in the Arctic, entirely on her own resources, for upwards of three years. Of the many who had searched for Franklin, Collinson came closest to the place where the expedition had ended. Collinson's addition to geographical knowledge on this Arctic trip was very considerable, and would have been tantamount to the discovery of the north-west passage, had this not been already actually achieved by the men of the Investigator" (DNB). Condition: Very Good. On offer is an archive of forty-nine [49] handwritten letters and airgrammes [one typed] written by Ralph C.E. Lord known as 'Lordy' a man who is for the most part a captain in the Royal Canadian Engineers. The letters cover the period of late 1943 through to the end of 1945 and one dated 1946. On the one hand the letters show a joviality especially for his two children Patricia and William but in other communications there is the terrible sadness of a marriage in hell and on the cusp of divorce which in one of the letters near the end deals with precisely that. Ralph seems to be barely keeping things together - he is stoically allowing his wife to claim the divorce is his fault for the sake of appearances with the children even though the opposite appears to be true. Ralph in other letters complained how his wife's inappropriate actions leading to a penalty fine and Ralph's temporary loss of his captaincy. He has covered up for her for the sake of the children. In another heartbreaking letter Ralph who, now that the war has ended, is trying to start a business in the UK apologizes profusely to the children for his inability to send presents for Christmas. This archive is a rare peak into a man's heartbreaking situation which most likely was more common an occurence in the war years than one imagines. Also rare to see a man to be so emotive yet still maintain his self esteem. Remarkable set of letters. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Autograph.
