This book chronicles the efforts of two secular Swiss priests, Father Gregory Haas and Father John Frey, to establish the first American Capuchin monastery in Calvary, Wisconsin, in 1857. Driven by their devout faith and an unwavering desire to spread the Catholic faith in the untamed American frontier, these two pioneers faced numerous challenges and hardships in their quest to build a lasting religious community. The book delves into the historical context of the Capuchin Order, founded by Saint Francis of Assisi, and traces the development of the Franciscan movement in Europe. It highlights the unique aspects of the Capuchin branch, with its emphasis on extreme poverty, humility, and simplicity. The author provides insights into the lives of the founding priests, their motivations, and their unwavering dedication to their mission. The narrative unfolds the struggles and triumphs of the early Capuchin community in America, as they sought to establish a foothold in a foreign land. The book explores the challenges they faced in adapting to a new culture, language, and societal norms. It sheds light on their interactions with the local Native American tribes and the growing immigrant population, as well as the broader religious landscape of the time. Through meticulous research and vivid storytelling, the author unravels the complexities of the Capuchin mission in America, showcasing the profound impact it had on shaping the religious and cultural fabric of the nation. This book offers a valuable contribution to understanding the history of Catholicism in the United States and serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Capuchin Order. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

The diploma entitles Homont as well as his mother, brothers and sisters ('Matri nec non Fratribus et Sororibus') to the spiritual fruits accruing from Masses, prayers, vigils, penances, pilgrimages, meditations, and charitable works undertaken by the Capuchin order, in accordance with powers granted to this effect to the Franciscans by the fourteenth-century Pope Urban V. The document was issued by Radkersburg an Austrian who served as Capuchin Minister General between 1773 and 1789 during one of his general visitations in October 1779.
