The memoirs describe the career of an English officer named George Carleton, who served in campaigns from the Dutch War (1672) through the War of the Spanish Succession, ending with the Peace of Utrecht (1713). Carleton fought in Spain under Charles Mordaunt, 3rd Earl of Peterborough, during the Allied intervention in Spain in the early 1700s. The work includes detailed observations on Spanish society, customs, military operations, monasteries, and the experiences of prisoners of war.
