paperback. Condition: Very Good. Cambridge University Press [Published Date: 1914]. Softcover, xv, 180 pages. First paperback edition. In very good condition. Glossy black and white illustrated paper covers have light bumping to edges and light overall scuffing. Binding tight. Pages clean and unmarked. Some black and white illus…trations. [From back cover] This book uses Florentine death registers to trace the changing character of plague from the first outbreak of the Black Death in 1348 to the mid-fifteenth century. Through an innovative study of this evidence, Professor Carmichael develops two related strands of analysis. First, she examines the extent to which true plague epidemics occurred by exploring the role of other infectious diseases that may have significantly contributed to outbreaks of epidemiological "pestilence," identifying key differences between the epidemics of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. She then demonstrates how these differences influenced the perceptions of Italian city dwellers in the fifteenth century. While survivors of the fourteenth-century outbreaks, which claimed many prominent citizens, could not reasonably view plague as a disease of the poor, wealthy Florentines of the 1430s increasingly believed that fleeing the city could protect them. This shift in understanding paved the way for public health responses such as quarantine, pest houses, and health boards - measures that, ironically, increased the mortality of the poor and reinforced the belief that they constituted a dangerous element of Renaissance society.

Nuland & William Carlos Williams. ~"Between wisdom and medicine there is no gulf fixed; in fact, medicine possesses all the qualities that make for wisdom." ~HIPPOCRATES. / The dramatic story of medicine through the ages is the subject of this magnificent volume of selections from great writings and art~essays, fiction, poetry, paintings, woodcuts, and much more. MEDlCINE: A TREASURY OF ART AND LITERATURE celebrates the art and science of sustaining life through knowledge. Brought together for the first time in a lavishly illustrated, large~format book are excerpts from great medical documents such as Hippocrates' Decorum, Celsus's On Medicine, Pare's Ten Books of Surgery, and Harvey's On the Motion of the Heart and Blood. Great scenes from history appear in these pages, as lepers are cast from society in the Middle Ages, a cholera epidemic ravages Paris, and the poet Walt Whitman tends wounded soldiers during the American Civil War. Many of the groundbreakers, whose names are renowned, are in these pages, telling their own stories: Edward Jenner, Ignaz Semmelweis, Wilhelm Roentgen, and Albert Schweitzer. The great struggles against the threats to health, waged with both failures and suecesses by doctors like Joseph Lister, chemists like Louis Pasteur, and nursing pioneers like Florence Nightingale, dramatically illuminate the human condition. Yet these are just a sampling of the medical adventures that unfold in this volume, in fascinating texts and images. The 235 illustrations, 145 of which are exquisitely reproduced in full color, draw upon enduring works of art concerning medicine, including Rembrandt's The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp, Hogarth's Visit to a Charlatan, Eakins's The Agnew Clinic, and Van Gogh's The Hospital at Arles. Black~and~white illustrations provide numerous images from early medical tracts, showing ancient views of anatomy and pioneering methods of treatment. There are many hours of enjoyable reading and visual enrichment in this unique treasury. It is sure to delight people who practice medicine, who study to become medical professionals, or who simply want to bestow an unforgettable gift upon their favorite physician. ANN G. CARMICHAEL, M.D., PH.D., is a director of the Center for the History of Medicine at Indiana University, Bloomington. RICHARD M. RATZAN, M.D., is Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, Farmington. JACKET ILLUSTRATION: PIETRO LONGHI. The Apothecary. 1752. Oil on canvas.(60 X 48.1 cm). Galleria dell' Accademia, Venice.

Paperback. Condition: New. Originally published in 1986, this book uses Florentine death registers to show the changing character of plague from the first outbreak of the Black Death in 1348 to the mid-fifteenth century. Through an innovative study of this evidence, Professor Carmichael develops two related strands of analysis.…First, she discusses the extent to which true plague epidemics may have occurred, by considering what other infectious diseases contributed significantly to outbreaks of 'pestilence'. She finds that there were many differences between the fourteenth- and fifteenth-century epidemics. She then shows how the differences in the plague reshaped the attitudes of Italian city-dwellers toward plague in the fifteenth century. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in the history of the plague, Renaissance Italy and the history of medicine.
