Der zweite Halbband enthält das zweite Buch, das sich unter dem Titel "Über die weltliche Wissenschaft/Liber Secundus Saecularium Litterarum" ganz den (später so genannten) septem artes/disciplinas liberales widmet: Grammatik, Rhetorik, Dialektik, Arithmetik, Musik, Geometrie und Astronomie; ferner bietet der Band den Anhang mit Anmerkungen und Register zum Gesamtwerk. Die sieben Kapitel unterscheiden sich stark im Umfang; den meisten Raum nimmt in Cassiodors Werk die Dialektik ein, wohingegen Geometrie und Arithmetik nur mit kurzen Skizzen vertreten sind. - Der lateinische Text, der hier abgedruckt wird und der Neuübersetzung zugrundeliegt, folgt der Edition von R.A.B. Mynors, Oxford 1963. - Magnus Aurelius Cassiodorus Senator (ca. 485 - ca. 580), Abkömmling einer vornehmen römischen Familie und Kanzler Theoderichs d. Gr., zog sich in den Wirren der Gotenkriege aus der Politik zurück und gründete auf den väterlichen Gütern (im heutigen Kalabrien) das Kloster Vivariense und machte es zu einer Pflanzstätte der Wissenschaft. Als "Wissenschaftsprogramm" verfaßte Cassiodor die 'Einführung in die geistlichen und weltlichen Wissenschaften', ein bibliographisch-methodisches Handbuch für die Bibelarbeit im Vivariense. Für seine Zeit keineswegs selbstverständlich ist Cassiodors grundsätzliche Anerkennung und heuristische Nutzung der weltlichen Wissenschaften, an deren Kanonisierung als Sieben Freie Künste er maßgeblichen Anteil hat. Insofern Cassiodor wissenschaftsgeschichtlich eine Brücke zu Mittelalter und Neuzeit schlägt, kann die Bedeutung seiner Einführung kaum überschätzt werden. Er verbindet dabei den Glauben mit der weltlichen Bildung zu einem Ganzen, "denn was du auch studierst und zu welcher Erkenntnis du auch kommst - ums so besser schmeckt's dir, je mehr du ihm die Würze eines überirdischen Tuns gibst".
