Exemplaire qui rassemble 3 livres, très richement illustré, Livre 1 : 20 dessins et gravures in-texte, 35 gravures hors-texte dont une double planche (problème 30: mesures du madrigal); Livre 2: 28 gravures hors-texte; Livre 3 : 6 dessins et gravures in-texte et 3 gravures hors-texte, avec le feuillet dépliant in fine. Gravures de Jacob van Heyden (1573- 1645) réputé pour ses portraits gravés sur cuivre et de Peter Iselberg (1568-1630), auteur des gravures du célèbre ouvrage d'emblèmes Emblemata politica (1617) . Après la définition des 4 éléments (eau, terre, air, feu) ainsi que l'énoncé des 18 théorèmes , l'ingénieur et architecte français Salomon de Caus (1576-1626) inventorie dans le Livre premier les plus surprenantes et les plus extraordinaires des machines: celle ''pour faire une horloge avec le cours d'une fontaine'', celle ''pour contrefaire la voix des petits oiseaux par le moyen de l'eau et de l'air'', celle ''pour percer des pipes de bois''. Le livre II qui suit s'intéresse plus particulièrement aux grottes et fontaines pour l'ornement des Palais, Maisons de plaisance et Jardins, s'y succèdent dessins de volières à oiseaux, dessins de montagnes, et notamment le dessin de la grotte Tmollus en référence au récit de Midas par Ovide. Précurseur de la machine à vapeur et inventeur de machines extraordinaires pour les demeures royales d'Angleterre et d'Allemagne, Salomon de Caus (1576-1626) fut tout imprégné de culture encyclopédique à savoir la mécanique, la musique, les langues anciennes, la perspective et l'architecture. Malgré cela, il est demeuré à peu près inconnu jusqu'à nos jours. Afin de perfectionner ses connaissances il voyagea en Italie, en Belgique (y travaillant comme ingénieur pour l'Archiduc Albert), en Angleterre (au service du Prince de Galles), en Allemagne (pour Frédéric V), et là, à Heidelberg, il prit en charge la construction de nouveaux bâtiments, volières, jardins, portiques et fontaines jaillissantes. A ce point que les jardins du Palais d'Heidelberg furent considérés comme la huitième merveille du monde. jusqu'à son pillage. L'édition originale paraît en 1615 chez Jan Norten à Francfort. En l'année 1624, Salomon de Caus dessine pour le cardinal de Richelieu une carte de l'Italie et lui dédie La pratique et démonstration des horloges solaires édité chez Jérôme Drouart. Deux imprimeurs parisiens Jérôme Drouart et Charles Sevestre se chargent en 1624 de la nouvelle édition des Raisons des Forces mouvantes. Suite à l'édition princeps de 1615, plusieurs modifications quant au texte ont été apportées, l'orthographe révisée et le frontispice remanié. A la fin du Livre III, Livre qui n'est pas annoncé dans l'édition de 1615, Salomon de Caus espère '' faire encore un autre livre, où seront montrées des machines fort rares, & que je tiens fort secrètes, et entre les autres, une qui représentera une Musique plus parfaite qu'aucune humaine créature ne peut faire''. Dans cette édition de 1624 apparaissent 10 nouvelles planches dont certaines extraites du Hortus Palatinus (recueil de gravures publié en 1620). (cf Hélène Vérin, CNRS, 2009). Des manques au niveau des coiffes et des plats, auréoles sur les premiers feuillets, déchirure marginale (p28, Livre II), galeries de vers marginales livre I.
