Attraverso scavi, ricognizioni e altre modalità di ricerca si sta dipanando un progetto pluriennale che intende ricostruire le trasformazioni del paesaggio di quest'area. L'interesse della zona è dovuto a molti fattori. Qui si sono infatti succeduti un insediamento di età romana (Ficocle), poi diventato sede di una diocesi rurale e successivamente soppiantato da una città nel corso dell'alto Medioevo: Cervia. La città medievale ha prosperato per più di ottocento anni ed è stata poi abbandonata in età moderna e sostituita dall'abitato attuale. E non è tutto: la principale ragion d'essere di tutti questi insediamenti è il sale, preziosissima materia prima che ancora oggi viene lavorata e commercializzata in quest'area. L'indagine sulle modalità di estrazione, stoccaggio e commercializzazione del sale è un altro capitolo fondamentale delle nuove ricerche su Cervia.
