Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Good dj. First American Edition. [good sound copy with light shelfwear, minor soiling to edges of text block, some discoloration to pastedowns, code number rubber-stamped on rear endpaper; the jacket is heavily edgeworn (with an almost complete separation along the rear flapfold), a long ragged…diagonal closed tear at the bottom of the rear panel, several other smaller closed tears and edge-nicks, and some soiling to the rear panel]. The fourth of this author's half-dozen novels (all pretty scarce), before she gave up fictioning (at the suggestion of Noël Coward) and took up playwriting. The book, a "chronicle of conflicting passions, comedy, grief and sharp irony," follows the life of a young playwright from age 17 to 35, during which time he achieves success, falls in love and marries -- but then descends into bitterness when his wife's acclaim as a dress designer eclipses his own fading reputation. Illustrated by (dj) "BA" (Boris Artzybasheff) (illustrator).

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First American edition (published in the U.K. as *Heron*). A bit of staining and foxing on the endpapers, else about fine in attractive very good or better dustwrapper with a modest chip at the foot of the spine and other light wear. First novel, purportedly by the da…ughter of a famous author who wrote this under a pseudonym, about the three daughters of a famous author, and the unusual control he exerts over his daughters romantic and social lives. Handsome copy of an uncommon title. *OCLC* locates four copies, but doesn't reveal the author's true identity.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Tom came running up, pulling at his socks, so that there seemed something hiccuping, drunken, in his progress. 'We have been cleaning up,' he said cheerfully. Mrs. Oxford winced. These poor children in their menial roles-And here came Sa…rah, with a smut on her cheek. Left in genteel poverty by the death of their father, the Fontayne siblings-Sarah, Philly, Christopher, and Tom-are shaken when their mother, loving but dizzy, takes a liking to Julian, a widowed neighbour with two children of his own. Sarah becomes infatuated with a thirty-something diplomat. Philly endures being painted by a dull local artist. Julian's daughter Bronwen, a child prodigy who has already published a book, deals with the pressures of a literary life. And, in the end, a valiant attempt is made to revive the decaying, long-neglected ballroom of the family home for Sarah's 18th birthday party. All against a backdrop of the ominous approach of World War II. Evoking Diana Tutton's Guard Your Daughters and Dodie Smith's I Capture the Castle, Beneath the Visiting Moon is both a glittering, funny tale of romance and family life and a brilliant, haunting story of youthful hopes and heartbreaks in a world on the brink of devastating change. 'First-rate comedy. What a delightful little world it is that Miss Cavan has created and how truly representative of the time' New York Times.
