Im September 1844 wurde ihm die Lehrkanzel des römischen Zivilrechts und Kirchenrechts an der Grazer Universität verliehen (Nachfolger von Franz Wiesenauer). Als Lehrer des Kirchenrechts war Chabert schon damals von der Notwendigkeit überzeugt, im Verhältnis von Kirche und Staat beiden Teilen größere Selbstständigkeit zu gewähren. . Er vertrat die Ansicht, dass die Kenntnis der früher in Österreich geltenden Rechte und Rechtsgewohnheiten von größtem Interesse und ebenso von praktischer Bedeutung sei. Seine Lieblingsidee blieb deshalb auch die Schaffung einer österreichischen Staats- und Rechtsgeschichte. Ein früher Tod machte diesen Bestrebungen ein Ende.
