The letter is 1p., landscape 12mo. In fair condition, with light signs of age, placed in a windowpane mount in the remains of a leaf from an album. The letter reads: 'Dear Mr Westmacot [no doubt the sculptor Sir Richard Westmacott or his son] - I have a little reunion - on Monday evening 1st Feby - pray come - I am desired by to present you to her especially - that she may invite you to her next Fete'. The engraving is on a 21.5 x 13.5 cm piece of paper. Similarly-mounted as the letter, above it on the same leaf. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Depicts a garishly-dressed Stepney in extravagant feathered hat. With facsimile signature. The National Portrait Gallery does not have a copy of this engraving in its collection.

His work became fashionable, especially in court circles, and he was appointed painter in watercolour to Queen Victoria. Chalon painted the Queen in her robes of state at her accession. The portrait was copied by Edward Henry Corbould and from this the head and shoulders were engraved by William Humphrys, and were featured on many British colonial postage stamps.

Stains, not affecting the image. Alfred Chalon was born in Geneva to a father who soon was hired as professor at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, in England. Alfred became an artist, entered at the Royal Academy in 1797, joined the Associated Artists in Water-Colours, a group of aquarellists, and in the Academy was elected an associate (ARA) in 1812, then academician (RA) in 1816. Known for his portraits of the good society of London, he was chosen by Queen Victoria to paint a gift to her mother: Victoria in her State robes going to the House of Lords for her first official act, the prorogation of the Parliament, on 17 July 1837. After this task, Chalon was entitled Portrait Painter in Water Colour to Her Majesty and gained some celebrity. His 1837 portrait was engraved by Samuel Cousins and distributed to the public the day of Victoria's coronation, the 28 June 1838. Then, starting in 1851, the "Chalon head" appeared on some British colonies postage stamps. He died in 1860 at Campden Hill, in Kensington, London. Samuel Freeman (1773-1857) was an English engraver. He died on 27 February 1857, aged 84. Freeman worked chiefly in stipple, and is principally known as an engraver of portrait.
