"Mr Harry Greatorexs collection of historical theatrical effects and literature was so out of hand - so the largest room in his Swanwick home has been enlarged to cope. Mr Greatorex believes he has the finest private collection theatrical effects outside London and he receives several in-quaries authors and student each month. "Nine times out of ten I can supply the information they are wanting he says. His collection is filed away neatly but there is more work to be done on cross-indexing. He has specialised in collecting items from provincial theatres, but has a collection of every programme of every production on the London stage from about the turn century to around 1950. Mr Greatorex began his collection in 1940 when he went to production the pantomime Red Riding Hood at the Grand Theatre Derby. He is in the entertainments business himself and owns the Ballroom Ripley and Ripley roller-skating rink. Some items from his collection which includes Hairy Lauders walking stick although this is not on show are now on display at Ripley Library in an exhibition called Two Hundred Years of Theatre in Derbyshire". AUTHOR: The author / editor, John Kemble Chapman [1795-1851] publisher and printer of The Sunday Times (originally published in 1821 as The New Observer only becoming the Sunday Times in 1823 - with no relationship to the Times). Chapman was well known in theatrical and sporting circles and the Royal Dramatic Record appears to be an attempt both at a scholarly history of theatre as played before various British sovereigns and a flattering offering to the young queen and her consort. The opening remarks.the habits of a nation are formed by the pursuits of its rulers. and the example thus set by the sovereign can scarcely fail to be productive of beneficial effects, especially in what relates to the encouragement of the drama. Clearly, Chapman hopes that Victorias patronage of the theatre will help revive the drama. In this sense the work is both a historical record and plea for the stage to be reclaimed as an art form. Chapman especially praises the monarch for having had a temporary stage constructed at Windsor to which leading actors of the day were invited to perform before her, this giving the stage the royal seal of approval POSTAGE: PLEASE NOTE - This is a heavy item and may require additional postage for overseas deliveries.
