Undated, but published circa 1862, this is a rare account of this landmark trial that significantly shaped the law concerning mental health by challenging the burgeoning authority of Victorian psychiatry which led directly to the Lunacy Regulation Act 1862. The case was against Wiliam Frederick Windham, the squire of Felbrigg Hall in Norfolk, whose relatives wanted him declared Mad and a lunatic for both his eccentric ways, and his infatuation and marriage to Anne Agnes Willoughby who was a notorious courtesan. He was a spendthrift and was frittering away the family fortune, his relatives sought to gain control of his estate, The case caused a public sensation and was described in the British Journal of Psychiatry as "a significant event in psychiatric history" in the transition from "legal management in psychiatric illness and towards medical management".
