Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. The Morgan Library catalogs this same 1951 Edwin H. Morris issue, specifically noting the Dinah Shore recording credit and ukulele chord diagrams. The Lester S. Levy Sheet Music Collection likewise records the edition as 1951, published at 1619 Broadway, with piano/voice scoring and ukulele, guitar, and banjo applicability. A classic piece of postwar American novelty-song ephemera, Sweet Violets uses an old comic-song device in which each verse repeatedly leads the listener toward an expected risqué rhyme, then abruptly substitutes an innocent phrase. Coben and Grean's 1951 version became closely associated with Dinah Shore, whose portrait dominates this attractive two-color magenta/cream photographic cover. The surviving rear cover is especially useful for dating and publishing context, advertising Edwin H. Morris' contemporary Bing Crosby Song Folios at 75¢ each. Interestingly, the rear advertisement gives Morris' later address as 549 West 52nd Street, while the music's copyright line and front cover retain 1619 Broadway a nice little piece of publisher-history evidence within a single piece of ephemera. Very Good Condition. Complete and still quite presentable, with strong cover color and a clean, attractive Dinah Shore portrait. Moderate age toning, handling and edge wear; small corner creases; a short tear/split at the upper edge extending into the first music leaf; additional small edge nicks and closed tears; light rubbing and surface wear. Interior music remains clean and highly legible, with no obvious ownership inscription or extensive notation visible in the supplied photographs. There are actually three overlapping collecting audiences here: vintage sheet music, Dinah Shore memorabilia, and mid-century popular-music photography/graphic design. The Levy archive describes the Shore photograph simply as unattributed, so despite its prominence I would not invent a photographer credit. The cover design is particularly successful: Shore's softly haloed portrait, botanical violet illustration, oversized floral-filled S and V, and limited magenta palette are textbook examples of inexpensive sheet music being turned into effective record-store advertising. Cy Coben (1919-2006) was a prolific American songwriter particularly associated with country and novelty material; the Morgan Library authority record confirms his dates and authorship of this work. Charles Grean was a songwriter, arranger, producer, and bassist whose career crossed popular and country music. Their Sweet Violets remains in print in modern arrangements - evidence that the song has outlasted the disposable sheet-music format in which this copy originally appeared.…
