This specific cover made history by featuring a man on a Vogue cover for the very first time. Historically, Vogue strictly featured women. This cover departed from its aloof and highly formal past to embrace a playful, pop-culture-infused holiday spirit. And Ray Bolger, who was a highly recognizable star at the time, offered it a broad mainstream appeal for the holiday season. The photographer Irving Penn, was rapidly revolutionizing fashion photography by stripping away backgrounds in favor of stark, studio settings. Dorian Leigh is considered one of the earliest supermodels, as well as a favorite muse of Penn. She is on over 50 magazine covers during her career, and in 1946 alone, she made history by landing on no less then 6 Vogue covers.
