Non-authorial gift inscription dated July 1919 on front free endpaper with names obscured under swaths of black marker; front free endpaper soiled at top corner with faint residue from removed price sticker. Introductory biographical essay titled "Concerning Crowe" by editor W.B. Chase; four pages of publisher's advertisements at rear. A Sheffield, Alabama native and a 1911 graduate of Vanderbilt University, James Richard Crowe (1889-1918) was employed as a newspaper reporter in Memphis and New York City before enlisting with the United States Air Service in 1917. Upon completion of initial training in Cambridge, Massachusetts and Minneola, New York, Crowe was assigned to the 15th Foreign Detachment, Aviation Section, Signal Corps but, shortly after being commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in July 1918, Crowe died in a plane crash on September 29, 1918 at the 3rd Aviation Instruction Center at Issoudun, France. PAT CROWE, AVIATOR is a collection of Crowe's well-regarded literary "letters-home" featuring personal impressions and reflections on France and World War I. The book includes his famous "Jacqueline of the Chateau" which was first published in The New York Times Magazine upon its enthusiastic acceptance by editor Thomas Russell Ybarra.
