Add to basketFirst edition, a privately circulated sample book of papers from Abbey Mill, pleasantly presented as a "non-book" dedicated to "those who enjoy the sight and feel of good books but to their sorrow have little time for reading them". The author's family firm, Grosvenor, Chater and Company, had acquired Abbey Mill in 1854. It was "one of the few remaining small and independent paper mills in the British Isles" until it closed its doors in 1982. Aside from introductory prelims, An Essay on Silence contains no printed text, offering the reader a chance to admire "some exceptionally pleasant papers". Octavo. Various Abbey Mills paper stock, unprinted, as issued. Original green boards, spine lettered in gilt, green endpapers. With dust jacket. Spine ends bumped and worn, slight split at head, a few bumps, top edge foxed; jacket unclipped, spine toned, closed tear at head of rear joint, a little creased and nicked, faintly soiled, abrasion to front panel: a very good copy in like jacket.
