A major biography of Nicolas Fouquet, Marquis of Belle-Isle [1615-1680], who was superintendent of finances from 1652 to 1661. Although this was a period of financial difficulty for France, Fouquet managed to lavish some eighteen million francs on his own palace of Vaux, which is said to have surpassed even the royal residence of Fontainebleau. Of him Voltaire remarked "Never was a dissipator of the royal finances more noble and generous." He soon lost favour with the King, who had him arrested, and after a three-year trial, he was sentenced to imprisonment for life.
