The first edition of a history of the Order of the Golden Fleece by Jules Chifflet (1615-1676), son of Burgundian antiquary Jean-Jacques Chifflet (1588-1660), the author of an early heraldic survey of the Order, Insignia gentilitia equitum ordinis velleris aurei (Antwerp, 1632). The Order of the Golden Fleece is an order of knighthood founded by Philip III the Good, Duke of Burgundy in 1430 to defend the Roman Catholic religion and uphold the usages of chivalry. Following the War of Spanish Succession, the order divided into two branches, the Spanish and the Austrian. Size: Quarto.

Brunet I, 1820; Goldsmith C824; Graesse II, 126. Provenance: unidentified old owner's ink stamp on title; Otto Schäfer, acquired 1982 by gift, his penciled number OS 1241 on rear endleaf; Schäfer sale Sotheby's 1995 (listing laid in loose); bought there by Quaritch for Kenneth Rapoport (his paper ex-libris label on front pastedown). Jacques de Lalaing, the "bon chevalier," a renowned jouster and military commander in the service of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, died in 1453, aged only thirty-two, at the siege of Poeke during the Ghent War. Some twenty years after his death, the Livre des faits de Jacques de Lalaing was commissioned to record his deeds. In A Knight for the Ages: Jacques de Lalaing and the Art of Chivalry (Los Angeles: Getty Publications, 2018), Wim Blockmans places the manuscript in the context of Burgundian court culture, chivalric values, and Jacques's life and family, proposing that two fellow members of the Toison d'or, Adolph of Cleves and Anthony of Burgundy, who were at Jacques's side when he died, may even have sponsored the writing of Jacques's biography. Since the republication of Chastellain by Jean Alexandre Buchon in the 19th century, the authorship has been given to others in the ambit of the Toison d'or, notably Jean le Fèvre de Saint-Remy, first Toison d'or king of arms, and the herault Charolais. Thirteen manuscript copies of the Livre des faits survive, three fully illuminated, including J. Paul Getty Museum Ms. 114 (2016.7, see ill.), purchased in 2016 from a collateral branch of the Lalaing family, its frontispiece circa 1530 by Simon Bening showing le Fèvre at his desk writing the Livre des faits. In A Knight for the Ages Anne-Marie Legaré traces the provenance of the Getty manuscript through the branches of the Lalaing family, developing a convincing case for its most probable patron, Antoine de Lalaing, 1st Count of Hoogstraten (c. 1480-1540). This 1634 first edition, rare in institutions, is dedicated by its editor Jules Chifflet to Albert [François] de Lalain[g] [1610-1642], [7th] "Comte de Hoochstrate, Colonel d'un Regiment de hauts Allemans, pour le Service de Sa Majesté.".
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Folio. First edition of a richly illustrated history of the family of Thurn und Taxis. Contemporary blind tooled calf, raised bands. Wear and some abrasions to leather. Joints starting to split. 8 of 9 plates, 3 folding, 25 coats of arms engraved in text, head and tail pieces. Occasional dampstaining in margins, affecting engraved title, minor worming in gutters primarily at back. Published on the occasion of the coming of age of Lamoral Cladius Franz, Count of Taxis. From an early age he had taken an interest in his distinguished family whose fortunes derived from their monopoly on the postal services in the Holy Roman Empire, the Netherlands and Burgundy since the early sixteenth century. Perhaps the most remarkable engraving in the work is the double-page plate by Wenzel Hollar representing the splendid funeral of Jean-Baptise De Tassis, which took place in Cologne 1588. The count had been killed during the siege of the town of Bonn. The work also contains a fine portrait of Count Lamoral engraved by Paul Pontius after Nicholaus van der Horst, both distinguished pupils of Rubens. Both were also responsible for the remarkable double portraits of Muley Hassan, ruler of Tunis in the 1530s, and Johann Baptista, Count of Taxis, both in Arab costume and identical pose. Muley Hassan resided in Johann Baptista's house in Brussels for a few months in 1535 after the capture of his kingdom by the Barbary Pirates. He was reinstated by Charles V later in the same year. Drugulin 765; Funck 291; Hollstein 9: Van der Horst, 50-53, 56, 62-63. Cioranescu 1928.
