Condition: Gut. Front cover with a small image of the art print, 1 side text, 1 side with art print fixed to one side, back side blank. Leaflet slightly bumped at the lower edge in the fold, art print very good. Text in Japanese and English. - Oban Nishikie - (Important Art Object) Eishô was active as a follower of Hosoda (Chobunsai) Eishi during the Kansei era (1789-1800), when Utamaro's influence on print designing in Edo was at its peak. In this series of bust portraits of courtesans, Eisho, while he designed bold compositions to fill the entire format, maintained much of the aristocratic tone of his teacher. The courtesan Midorigi is depicted as a lovely young girl, stroking a china bull charm. The massed black hair, white skin and colorful textile patterns in red and purple are made to stand out forcefully against a ground of grey with a vine pattern reserved in white. As the title implies, there were issued a series of these portraits, which seem to have been extremely popular, judging from the number extant. Leaflet slightly bumped at the lower edge in the fold, art print very good. Text in Japanese and English. - Aiban Nishikie - (Important Art Object) In conceiving this design, Eisho used several familiar symbols to reinforce the mood of the Girls' Festival, including the dandelions decorating the cartouche in the upper left, as well as the handled reed basket of clams and the flowering peach branch. While retaining a preference for the delicate female type developed some years earlier by his teacher Eishi, Eisho also followed the tendency of his time to emphasize the decorative values of Japanese costume, rather than focus attention on the face. The upper part of the young girl's body is intentionally drawn rather small in comparison with the exaggerated proportions of the lower body, thus giving stability to the design. Judging from the style of the coiffure, drawn back close to the head, this print dates from the last years of the Kansei era (ca. 1800). Leaflet slightly bumped at the lower edge in the fold, art print very good. Text in Japanese and English. - Oban Nishikie - (Important Art Object) This print is one of a series entitled "Yukun Waka Sanjin" (Three Courtesan Goddesses of Waka Poetry) and is a parody on three famous medieval poets who became the patron deities of the Sumiyoshi, Tamatsushima, and Hitomaro shrines. One other print, portraying Hanaogi, is known. Eishd's half-length portraits show a strong influence of Utamaro, the dominant painter of beautiful women in the 1790's. But in his full-length portraits, such as this print of Hinazuru, Eisho followed more the style of his teacher Chobunsai Eishi. The faces of the women depicted in full length lack that coquettish charm of expression found in the half-length portraits. This composition of Hinazuru - knee raised, one hand grasping the collar of her outer robe, head slightly averted - is not only typical of the Eishi school but also presents a splendid tableau of femininity. Eisho worked for only three or four years, beginning about 1794. His last works may well be three or four illustrated books (kibyoshi'), published in 1798 or 1799. The portrait of Hinazuru is probably a work of about 1795. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550 Leaflet 28,5*42 cm, Art print 21,7*32,2 cm.
