Both the slipcase & wrap are white, pebbled boards, lightly soiled from age & handling, slipcase has one darker corner (sun.damp.), opposite corner has a crack in surface. Wrap spine is soiled from handling, titling is sharp & clear. A sprinkling of foxing on folds of folios. Pages are bright & clean throughout. All pages present, including additional drawings. Signed by both artist & publisher.

Condition: Very Good binding. Folio. 155, [1 (blank)] pp. Limited Edition, number 4 of 115 copies, signed by Chopard on the limitation page. Unbound and printed on single folios, all laid into printed wrapper with additional blank folios at front and rear of the book. This is housed in a parchment-backed chemise titled in red with a white, imitation levant-grained cloth, which is in turn enclosed in a slipcase of the same cloth and trimmed in parchmentquite a package! 12 full-page lithographs in addition to numerous in-text lithographs. The blank folios are toned from the wrapper; wrapper has a closed tear at the top of the front joint; parchment spine of the chemise is somewhat soiled; slipcase is soiled with joints that are quite weaktwo splits have been mended, but remain tender. A wonderful edition by the Gonin brothers of the 18th century French poet's fables, beautifully illustrated by Gaston Albert Chopard.

Typography, book design and printing of the text by Philipp Gonin on his own press at 15, rue de Lille, Paris. The lithographs were printed by E. Desjobert, the stones destroyed after printing. Complete edition of all 110 fables by Florian. In the present work, one of the really rare ones of the Gonin press, the French artist Gaston Chopard (18831942) offers proof of his genius as a painter of animals.
