In ihm werden kurzgefasst die Pflichten des täglichen Lebens behandelt, insbesondere die eines Staatsmannes. -- Mit officium hat Cicero das griechische [ . ] ( kathekon ) wiedergegeben, was so viel wie das einem Zukommende und im technischen Sinne die Pflicht bedeutet. De officiis ist in Briefform an Ciceros Sohn Marcus geschrieben und nicht wie viele von Ciceros philosophischen Schriften in Dialogform verfasst. Das Werk besteht aus drei Büchern, wobei das erste das ehrenhafte Verhalten behandelt, das zweite die für den Menschen nützlichen Pflichten und das dritte Buch Situationen nennt, in denen diese miteinander in Konflikt geraten können. Im ersten und dritten Buch bezieht er sich auch auf die vier Kardinaltugenden und die Oikeiosis-Lehre, die ein wichtiger Bestandteil der stoischen Ethik ist und die Hauptgrundlage für Cicero darstellt.
