WOORD VOORAF In Vlaanderen is de stelregel "wat we zelf doen, doen we beter" ongetwijfeld ingegeven door verantwoordelijkheidszin eerder dan door verwaandheid. Men moet echter weten wat men kan en wat men niet kan. Wellicht was het zonder meer van ons verwaand te denken dat we in zes maanden de omvangrijke opdracht konden klaren die de VRWB had uitgeschreven. Maar gelukkig moesten we het niet alleen doen. Ons onderzoek naar de stand van zaken in de cultuur- en gedragswetenschappen hield de consultatie in van vele gesprekspartners, en dit zowel voor de kwantitatieve als voor de kwalitatieve gegevens. Wat in dit rapport wordt aangeboden is evenzeer hun prestatie als het werk van de auteurs. Het stuk bestaat immers vooral uit de gegevens en antwoorden van vele professoren, onderzoekers en ambtenaren. Hoewel ze te talrijk zijn om hier allen met naam te worden vermeld zijn we hen in elk geval bijzonder erkentelijk voor hun vlotte en bereidwillige medewerking. Ook een even ruim aantal professoren en ambtenaren die we niet rechtstreeks geconsulteerd waren voor ons onderzoek bijzonder betekenisvol via diverse publikaties en helder opgestelde administratieve stukken. Bedrijfsdirecteurs en bankafgevaardigden bleken eveneens bereid om over cultuurwetenschappen en economie te praten en ingenieurs bevestigden nadrukkelijk de noodzaak van de reeds door henzelf georganiseerde cultuurwetenschappelijke bezinning in de actuele commerciële en technologische revolutie. We hopen dat ze allen hun attitudes en antwoorden in onze formuleringen correct verwoord terugvinden. De opdracht hield ook de exploratie in van buitenlandse ontwikkelingen. We hadden het geluk daarbij gebruik te kunnen maken van het netwerk van contacten met wetenschapsonderzoekers dat EASST (European Association for the Study of Science and Technology) en 4S (Society for Social Study of Science) biedt. Een bijzonder woord van dank richten we ook tot de Onderzoeksraad van de Universiteit Gent, die onder het voorzitterschap van vice-rector Etienne Vermeersch bereid werd gevonden dit onderzoeksproject aanvullend te steunen, zodat een lid van de Vakgroep Wijsbegeerte en Moraalwetenschap extra kon worden ingeschakeld. Overigens hebben meerdere leden van de vakgroep, waaronder in het bijzonder Erwin De Nil, ons in hun vrije uren op tal van punten geholpen. Bij de diverse tussentijdse rapporteringen en besprekingen is ons door het VRWB-begeleidingscomité veel bijgebracht dat we ter verbetering van dit verslag hebben kunnen aanwenden. Als het verslag op enige verdienste aanspraak kan maken is dat in ruime mate aan het advies en de toewijding van alle leden van het begeleidingscomité te danken. Speciaal willen we professor Leo Apostel vermelden die in ons het enthousiasme heeft gewekt voor de interdisciplinaire wetenschapsbeoefening. We hopen dat dit rapport een bescheiden bijdrage kan leveren tot de volwaardige uitbouw van het type van multidisciplinair onderzoek ? geesteswetenschappen en natuurwetenschappen samen ? waarvoor hij al zolang ijvert. Edwin Land, de auteur van de retinex theorie voor kleurenwaarneming en uitvinder van de succesvolle Polaroid camera hanteerde als stelregel: "niets zelf te doen wat anderen even goed doen." De combinatie van cultuur en wetenschap die Apostel voorstaat behoort wellicht tot de taken die Vlaanderen het best zelf kan uitvoeren.
