From the foreword by P A Shaver: "Since their first detection 15 years ago, radio recombination l…ines from several elements have been observed in a wide variety of objects including HII regions, planetary nebulae, molecular clouds, the diffuse interstellar medium, and recently, other galaxies. The observations span almost the entire range from 0.1 to 100 GHz, and employ both single dish and aperture synthesis techniques. The theory of radio recombination lines has also advanced strongly, to the point where it is perhaps one of the best-understood in astro-physics. In a parallel development, it has become possible over the last decade to study these same highly-excited atoms in the laboratory; this work provides further confirmation of the theoretical framework. However there has been continuing controversy over the astrophysical interpretation of radio recombination line observations, especially regarding the role of stimulated emission. A workshop was held in Ottawa on 24-25 August, 1979, bringing together many of the active scientists to review the field and discuss these questions of interpretation. A broad consensus has emerged: the subtleties of the line-formation process are understood, and the conditions under which reliable in formation can easily be extracted from the line measurements are known. It thus appears likely that the emphasis will shift increasingly from the study of the line phenomenon itself to further application in other areas of astrophysics, ranging from physical processes in plasmas (temperatures, densities, ionization structure), to the large-scale properties of our galaxy (abundances, kinematics, structure), and studies of extragalactic systems. This volume contains the 22 papers presented at the Ottawa workshop. It is the first book on the radio recombination lines, and provides a comprehensive review of research in this field." Condition: The covers are a little rubbed and marked, but the contents are in very good condition, with clean pages and secure binding. There is one small stamp to the ffep stating "Book Sale" but otherwise this remains a very good copy of a scarce astrophysics title.

Februar 1938 in Luzern; 9. Februar 2025[1] in Salzburg) war eine Schweizer Opernsängerin (lyrischer Sop…ran) und Hochschullehrerin. Sie galt als eine der profiliertesten Mozart-Interpretinnen ihrer Zeit. Leben Edith Mathis studierte an den Konservatorien Luzern und Zürich (bei Elisabeth Bossart). Ihre ersten Bühnenerfahrungen sammelte sie in ihrer Heimatstadt. Dort gab sie 1957 ihr Debüt als 2. Knabe in Mozarts Zauberflöte. Von 1959 bis 1963 war die junge Sopranistin vier Jahre Ensemblemitglied des Opernhauses in Köln, ab 1963 der Deutschen Oper Berlin. Gleichzeitig führten Edith Mathis Gastspiele an die Staatsoper Hamburg, zum Glyndebourne Festival und immer wieder zu den Salzburger Festspielen. Weitere wichtige Stationen ihrer Karriere waren unter anderem: Covent Garden Opera London, Bayerische Staatsoper München, Metropolitan Opera New York, Wiener Staatsoper, Gran Theatre del Liceu Barcelona, Opéra de Paris. Besondere Höhepunkte ihrer künstlerischen Laufbahn waren ihre Teilnahme an den Uraufführungen der Opern Der Zerrissene von Gottfried von Einem am 17. September 1964 an der Hamburgischen Staatsoper, Der junge Lord von Hans Werner Henze am 7. April 1965 am Deutschen Opernhaus Berlin und Hilfe, Hilfe, die Globolinks von Gian Carlo Menotti am 21. Dezember 1968 an der Hamburgischen Staatsoper. Edith Mathis Repertoire erstreckte sich von den leichten lyrischen Partien Mozarts (Despina, Cherubino, Susanna, Zerlina) bis zum jugendlichen Fach (Agathe / Der Freischütz, Marschallin / Der Rosenkavalier, Contessa / Die Hochzeit des Figaro). Sie sang unter Herbert von Karajan, Karl Böhm sowie Karl Richter einige ihrer bedeutendsten Schallplatteneinspielungen (DGG, EMI, Philips usw.). Sowohl ihr Ännchen im Freischütz als auch ihre Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro gelten als massstäblich. Auch als Kunstlied- und Oratoriensängerin machte sich Edith Mathis einen Namen. Besonders am Herzen lag ihr die geistliche Musik von Johann Sebastian Bach. Ihr Vortrag bestach vor allem durch musikalische Ausdruckskraft und Stimmschönheit. 1979 wurde Edith Mathis zur bayerischen Kammersängerin ernannt.[2] Von 1992 bis 2006[2] war sie Professorin für Lied- und Oratorieninterpretation an der Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien. 2001 trat sie von der Bühne zurück.[3] Sie leitete zahlreiche Meisterkurse in Europa, Japan, Korea, Kanada und in den USA. Eine ihrer Schülerinnen war Diana Damrau. Edith Mathis war lange Zeit mit dem Dirigenten Bernhard Klee verheiratet, und zuletzt mit dem Kunstsammler Heinz Slunecko.[1] Im Februar 2025 starb sie zwei Tage vor ihrem 87.
