8°. 160 S. Illustriertes Ohln. mit Schwarzprägung. Sehr gutes Exemplar. Engelhorns Allgemeine Romanbibliothek, 2. Jahrgang (1885), Band 23 - aber hier wohl zweite oder höhere Auflage (in der Verlagswerbung auf den Vorsätzen wird bereits der Jahrgang 31 angezeigt). Die Autorin (1825-1908) mußte mit ihrer Familie schon als Kind durch Deutschland, Frankreich und die Schweiz ziehen, da ihr Vater seine Heimatstadt aus politischen Gründen verlassen mußte. Erst 1841 kam sie nach dem Tod ihrer Mutter und 1848 auch ihr Vater nach Deutschland zurück. Dieser arbeitete dann als Berichterstatter einer preußischen Zeitung beim Frankfurter Paulskirchen-Parlament, eine Zeit lang auch unter Mitarbeit seiner Tochter. Claires Bruder Bodo wurde 1849 als Teilnehmer des Dresdner Maiaufstandes verhaftet und zum Tode verurteilt, dann aber zu lebenslanger Haft begnadigt. Mit Freunden zusammen plante seine Schwester seine Befreiung. Der Plan wurde aber verraten und sie selbst für drei Monate inhaftiert und danach aus Sachsen ausgewiesen. Als Autorin verfasste sie Novellen, Erzählungen und Reisebeschreibungen und arbeitete auch als Übersetzerin (u.a. die mehrbändige "Geschichte meines Lebens" von George Sand und Iwan Turgenews "Väter und Söhne").
