Autorin ist die geniale Schauspielerin und Opernsängerin Claire Josèphe Hippolyte Leris de La Tude (1723-1803), die vor allem unter dem Namen "Mademoiselle Clairon" Weltruhm erlangte und wegen ihrer skandalträchigen, wiewohl überall taktvollen "Erinnerungen" als eine der wenigen Schriftstellerinnen ihrer Zeit die Genderforschung bis heute beschäftigt: "son jeu en était la perfection, et l'on disait d'elle ce que Dorat exprima si bien dans son poème de la déclaration théatrale: 'Tous, jusqu'à l'art, chez elle a de la vérité'. Presque tous les auteurs tragiques de ce temps, Du Belloy, Saurin, Marmontel, Voltaire même, eurent de grandes obligations à son talent . Mlle Clairon avait une figure agréable, et surtout de la physionomie, cette autre beauté essentielle à la scène . en 1799 parurent ses 'Mémoires', qui firent alors beaucoup de bruit. Quelques anectdotes bizarres, moins authentiques peut-être que conformes au goût du temps, contribuèrent à la vogue de l'ouvrage. Son véritable mérite était dans ses réflexions, pleines de tact, sur l'art théâtral et l'analyse des principaux rôltes que l'auteur avait joués" (Hoefer).
