Hardcover. 155 p.; 21.5 cm. From the jacket: `Jesse V. Clardy, in setting out to tell the story of Radishchev's tragic life [1749-1802], discusses his political theory, his philosophy and his theory of natural law. A specialist in Russian affairs, Dr. Clardy does not accept the view, widely held in Russia and elsewhere, that Radishchev was a true follower of the radical writers of the French revolution, nor a forerunner of modern totalitarianism. In fact, he says, he might well have accepted an enlightened monarch of Peter the Great's stature or the type of government that England had after the election reform of 1867. The reason given by the author of this penetrating book is that Radishchev believed in natural law. He claimed for man the rights to life, liberty and property because he is a human being. These rights, he said, are inherent in man's nature; they cannot, as the radical French and Russian revolutionaries argued, be arbitrarily denied or taken away by society. It is in this important particular that Radishchev's philosophy differes from that of Rousseau and Lenin.' Good orig. red cloth, spine lightly chafed. Unread copy.
