First and Only Edition commemorated the celebration held at Cambridge from June 22 to June 24, 1909, marked the centenary of Charles Darwin's birth and the 50th anniversary of the publication of "On the Origin of Species." This event was a significant gathering of scientists and scholars from around the world to honour Darwin's contributions to science.The Darwin Celebration of 1909 was a landmark event commemorating the profound impact of Charles Darwin's work on the scientific community and the broader understanding of the natural world. The proceedings reflected both the historical significance and the ongoing influence of Darwin's ideas in various scientific disciplines. This particular edition was owned by E.M.Forster as well as Laura Mary Forster. Charles Darwin stayed at her house in Surrey in 1879 and Laura was a lifelong friend of Darwin's eldest daughter Henrietta. Size: 8.1/2" x 10 1/2" in the original quarter beige buckram, dark brown paper sides. The cover has Gold and Red stamping as well as blind embossing around the University of Cambridge emblem. The spine has browning and on the back cover a small layer of the paper has been rubbed off. All binding tight and no markings. This is a unique and very good copy of a scarce limited edition publication.

[4] The official four page 'Programme' sent to delegates attending the Darwin commemoration held in Cambridge between 22 and 24 June, 1909 when the University hosted scientists, scholars and public figures from 167 different countries to celebrate the centenary of Charles Darwin's birth and the ?ftieth anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of Species. The large quarto-sized printed bifolium has a single horizontal fold which is torn about 4cm along from the foreedge, withe old folds near the foreedge. The text offers a detailed programme of events which begins with the Reception of Delegates in an evening reception at the Fitzwilliam Museum, through a Garden Party in the Fellows Garden at Trinity College, hosted by 'Mr William Erasums Darwin' and numerous other members of the Darwin family to the Rede Lecture delivered by Sir Archibald Geikie. There are additional notes about the Darwin Exhibition and the availability of 'most interesting volumes' from Charles Darwin's Library. Freeman notes that this edition is also encountered bound in quarter parchment; no priority has been established. Freeman 1481. Quarto. Photogravure portrait frontispiece, 3 photogravure portrait plates, 7 half-tone plates, map of Cambridge. Original quarter buckram, dark greyish-brown paper sides, front cover lettered in gilt and with University of Cambridge crest in red and gilt inside circle stamped in blind. Corners and spine ends worn, spine toned, covers marked, gilt lettering a little faded but crest bright, light internal foxing, cords occasionally visible: a very good copy.
