Add to basket8vo. 9 x 5.75 inches. [vi] + 98 pp. Pamphlet in stitched binding. Some age wear and a little spotting, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by engraved portrait frontispiece. Published as part of a lengthy pamphlet war between Nathaniel Jeffreys (1758?-1810), a London jeweller and MP for Coventry, 1796-1803, and supporters of the Prince of Wales, one of his customers, whom Jeffreys was attacking. Jeffreys claimed the Prince (later King George IV) was in debt to him over the loan and jewels for Mrs Fitzherbert and also felt aggrieved as he had lost his Commons seat for no longer meeting the property qualification for members. He therefore in 1806 published a pamphlet entitled A Review of the Conduct of his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, which provoked this and other vituperative replies. In response to these, Jeffreys issued a counterattack, A Refutation of the Positive Falsehoods and Gross Misrepresentations contained in the Several Publications professing to be in Reply to the Review of the Conduct of the Prince of Wales. Maria Fitzherbert (1756-1837) was the long-time companion of the Prince and contracted a legally invalid Catholic marriage with him in 1785. Agood example from the polemical pamphlet wars being waged in the in the early nineteenth century. A scarce title. HISTORY/THEOLOGY 19th CENTURY HISTORY 19TH CENTURY PAMPHLETS HISTORY/THEOLOGY.
