This dramatic portrait of Walter Scott was published in THE AUTHORS OF ENGLAND: A Series of Medallion Portraits of Modern Literary Characters, Engraved from the Works of British Artists by Henry F. Chorley, (editor) and Achille Collas, (engraver). London: Published by Charles Tilt at 86 Fleet Street, 1838. Achille Collas (1795â"1859) was a French engineer, inventor, and engraver who developed a method for producing engravings after medallions and other reliefs between 1825 and 1832, and demonstrated it at the Salon of 1833. This engraving is listed as Item 221 in A Descriptive Account of the Portraits, Busts, Published Writings, and Manuscripts, of Sir Walter Scott, Bart., Collected and Exhibited at Edinburgh on Occasion of the Scot Centenary in 1871. Prepared for publication by Sir William Stirling Maxwell, Bart., David Laing, LL.D., James Drummons, R.S.A. Edinburgh: William Paterson, 1874.

The book includes notable figures such as George Gordon Byron, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and William Wordsworth among others, and is illustrated by Achille Collas with additional notices by Henry F. Chorley. Original publisher's embossed brown cloth, with gilt titles to front. Rubbed and marked, spine dulled. Head and tail crushed and slightly split to top. Chocolate coloured pastedown and FREP. Rear of FEP has previous owners name in old ink, dated Xmas'00, also pencil initials of 'AAH'. Hinge split to pastedown and FEP. Engraving to prelim of Felicia Hemans. With an additional engraved title page, as well as numerous full-page plates engraved by Collas's patent process; engravings are on thicker gsm paper (protected by a blank leaf). Contains a terminal leaf of publisher's advertisements. Scattered spotting throughout. Small sticker to rear pastedown stating, 'Bound by Burn'. The second edition of this catalogue of literary figures, The Authors of England contains portraits engraved on steel by Achille Collas' patent process, 'anaglyptography'. The technique involved a tracing arm, which, when moved over a rounded object such as a medallion, mechanically produced an engraving which appeared embossed. This edition contains the valuable final section 'Memorial of facts connected with the history of medallic engraving, and the process of M.
