SB. xi+372 pp, Illustrations & MapsPublished Price £20 A sound and stirring history of the mounted forces recruited during the âscramble for Africaâ of the late 19th century to help guard Britainâs huge imperial possessions in South Africa and Rhodesia. The British South Africa Police had a vast territory to patrol, and Colonel Harding, the author of this history, took part in its campaigns against risings by Rhodesiaâs two major tribes - the Mashona and the Matabele - along with the Jameson Raid, the famous precursor to the Boer War, and the Boer War itself. During the Great War the unit took part in campaigns against German South West Africa ( modern Namibia) and the long and gruelling fight against the German forces of that guerilla genius, Colonel Paul Von Lettow-Vorbeck in East Africa. This history contains an index, roll of Honour, and Honours and Awards for all ranks of the unit during the Great War.

The 51st (Highland) Division was an infantry division of the British Army that fought on the Western Front in France during the First World War from 1915 to 1918. The division was raised in 1908 as the Highland Division and later 51st (Highland) Division from 1915. On 13th November 1916 the village of Beaumont Hamel was attacked and captured by the 51st (Highland) Division. The 51st Highland Division memorial was unveiled in 1924, and is a sculpted statue of a Scottish soldier in his kilt. He looks across the landscape over the Y Ravine and beyond the German Front Line where this successful action broke through. This volume is a souvenir book to mark the occasion. It includes accounts of the origin of the Memorial scheme, a programme of the ceremony, various articles, and lists of guests present at the unveiling ceremony and a list of wreaths. The book is bound in the original grey cloth covered boards with black titling and a red emblem on the front board. The case of the book is in good to very good condition with shelf wear, some soiling and noticeable patchy damp marking to both boards. There are some insect holes in the cloth on the spine edges and lifting and bubbling to the cloth on the rear board. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few small marks and fairly heavy and noticeable insect damage down the spine edges of the endpapers and first and last few pages that extends in to about 1 1/2" of the endpapers and pages. The insect holes continue through the book but to a diminishing extend. There are also a few holes on the fore edge of the pages. There is no inscription.
