The Extraordinary Francis Maceroni was an inventor, diplomat, balloonist and soldier. As a Colonel of Caval…ry he was aide de camp of Murat during the Napoleonic Wars. Later he developed steam carriages but after various misfortunes was left penniless. A splendid set of this remarkable history.

"Maceroni recommended himself to Joachim Murat, king of Naples, who on 1 January 1814 made him one of his aides-de-camp, with the rank of colonel of cavalry, and sent him on missions to London, where he was when Murat's forces were defeated by… the Austrians at Tolentino in May 1815" (ODNB). 2 vols, octavo (212 x 133 mm). Engraved frontispiece portrait to vol. I. Contemporary black morocco-grain roan, flat raised bands, spine lettered in gilt, compartments richly gilt, boards elaborately decorated in gilt and blind, all edges gilt, yellow endpapers. Contemporary gift inscription on front flyleaf. Extremities slightly rubbed, endpapers dust soiled, prelims and endmatters foxed, occasional spotting to text blocks.
