Preface by editor Fred C. Fussell; Introduction; full color plates of twenty paintings by Rhoads all photographed by Earl Roberts; Glossary; Appendix. Monograph on Coffee County, Alabama native Jessie Dubose Rhoads (1900-1972) who, upon retirement to Phenix City, Alabama in 1961, pursued painting as a serious avocation. Utilizing a distinctive folk art style, Rhoads eventually produced over 150 paintings depicting early 20th century life in the Lower Chattahoochee Valley. Her visually vibrant paintings are somewhat reminiscent of the work of Oxford, Mississippi artist Theora Hamblett (1895-1977) but without the religious imagery.
