Light browning throughout, otherwise very good in contemporary plum half morocco on marbled boards, slightly rubbed, upper joint of Volume II cracking, head- and tail-caps chipped. xiv, 404pp., x, 434pp. Hurst and Blackett, Sandler 827, "Combermere was the title taken by Sir Stapleton Cotton who commanded Wellington's cavalry in the Peninsula. Most of the first volume concerns the Peninsular War."From 1815 Commanded the Cavalry in occupied France and was made Governor of Barbados in 1817. After holding the position of Commander in Chief in Ireland from 1822-5, he was sent to India; "A new Commander-in-Chief in India being then needed, and an expedition against Bharatpur being likely, Combermere was selected by the directors of the East India Company, reportedly on the advice of Wellington. An expedition against the Burmese was under consideration, and the cabinet asked Wellington's advice. He replied, "Send Lord Combermere." "But we have always understood that Your Grace thought Lord Combermere a fool." "So he is and a d-----d fool; but he can take Rangoon" [ODNB ]. Bharatpur duly fell, and Combermere remained in India for five, years, acting as pro tem. Governor General during Lord Amherst's absence in the hills. He died in 1855 having seen no further service following his return from India in 1830.

Add to basketExtremely uncommon, Library Hub shows a "second edition" of 1840 at BL and NLS, and a further edition of 1846 in BL; WorldCat lists copies of the present edition in Library of Congress and University of Pennsylvania. With a series of ownership inscriptions to the front pastedown: Lieut. H. O. Kedwick 67th regiment; Lieut. Frederick Rainsford, interpreter and quartermaster 67th regiment, who has noted the regiment's arrival in "Arracan" in 1837; and Henry Cotton, lieutenant adjutant 67th regiment. Cotton commanded the regiment during the Second Anglo-Burmese War, and died in Dehra Dun during the mutiny. Octavo (203 x 118 mm) Contemporary Indian calf. 4-page unpaginated prelims, and 68-pages of text, addenda leaf mounted on the rear pastedown, entirely interleaved. Slightly rubbed and a little stained, cockling on the boards, front free endpaper coming loose, internally lightly browned and a little shaken, but overall very good.
