Conrtemporary full calf, gilt fillet and rolled borders to the boards with central lozenge, the spines with flat0raised gilt bands. gilt compartments and two lettering pieces. No cracking to joints, no wear or chips to the leather, all beautifully preserved in a contemporary custom made wooden bookcase in which the volumes perfectly fit on two shelves. The cabinet has two glazed doors and the original key is present, a remarkable survival in itself. There is slight damage to the pediment on the right hand side. Volume one has the ownership inscription of Wm Temple, 1828. Purchased originally from a modern descendant, this cabineet having been in the same family for almost two centuries. Temple was likely a Bedfordshire man; his son was William Woods Temple, father of Annie Isabella Temple, who was the mother of Hamilton Temple Smith the Arts & Crafts cabinet maker.
