Paperback. Condition: New. Brand new softcover book! ++ ++; Teachings of the Doctrine of Eternal Lives speaks in a language that will not necessarily ring with a common note of familiarity to most modern inquirers, though prior generations of Latter-day Saints would have heard these words with greater frequency, and our earliest… pioneer fore-bearers would have been intimately acquainted with the teachings of these doctrines as espoused by that generation of apostles and prophets. Our modern Mormon compendium lacks a great deal of the initial restorative and declarative truths founded and established in the early years of the Restoration. Though lost from contemporary Mormon erudition, these greater salvational doctrines are collected from scripture and teachings of the earlier Restoration prophets and presented here to the reader, as a view into the world which the first adherents of Mormonism embraced with fervor and alacrity. Not insignificantly, as astute an observer as Hugh Nibley noted and taught these wondrous doctrines often through his illustrious career. His observations (among others) too are presented to the reader as an additional modern witness to the defining doctrines of the Latter-day Restoration. This book contains some things to consider as they originally appeared in their own words, from the scriptures, and teachings and writings of the Prophets, Apostles, and LDS Scholars. Why Anonymously written?:The author writes: "When asked why I published this book anonymously, the answer is very simple. These sacred things were transmitted by God to His Prophets and Apostles through the gift and power of revelation, and they are a gift from God to man. The prophets and apostles in turn shared their deepest knowing, testimonies, and insights regarding the signal and salient points of salvational truth, which God had revealed to them. This really has nothing to do with me, thus the necessary anonymity. These are not my words, rather, they are the words of Heaven, distilled for our eternal benefit, and brought together here from a lifetime of study and research. Any claim to originality of authorship regarding this material, would in my opinion, distract from the purpose of sharing these wondrous things." ; 6" x 9"; 425 pages.

Add to basketA substantial and carefully organized French medical recipe book, late 17thâ"early 18th century, divided into two parts with separate tables of contents (ca. 60â"70 remedies in total). Remedies are neatly written in ink with ruled margins, rubrication, and flourished headers, demonstrating a deliberate, âfinishedâ compilation ra…ther than casual notes. The collection covers an impressive breadth of ailments: pulmonary consumption (tuberculosis), hemorrhage, kidney and liver troubles, colic, indigestion, fluxions of the chest and head, hemorrhoids, toothache, eruptions, and even âvapours hystà riques.â Recipes employ early modern materia medicaâ"herbs, oils, honey, eggs, roots, metals such as lead and mercuryâ"revealing the overlap of folk medicine, Galenic tradition, and proto-scientific pharmacy. On the title-page is a large red wax armorial seal (oval, c. 22 à 18 mm), impressed with a quarterly shield: in each quarter a chevron charged with three cinquefoils/roses. The repetition across all four quarters suggests an established family coat rather than an alliance. This style is consistent with Burgundian/Champenois families of the late 17th century, and further research in the Armorial Gà nà ral de France could secure a precise attribution, significantly enhancing provenance and value. The manuscriptâs completeness, handsome marbled endpapers, and intact wax seal make it a rich survival of vernacular medical practice in Ancien Rà gime France, highly desirable to collectors of medical history, womenâs domestic roles in healthcare, and the cultural history of pharmacology. Institutions have been actively acquiring such recipe books for teaching collections in history of medicine, gender studies, and early modern science. Handsome two-part French manuscript medical recipe book (c. 1690â"1720), c. 60â"70 remedies, in contemporary calf with marbled endpapers and a large red wax armorial seal (quarterly, chevron with cinquefoils). A comprehensive vernacular manual of early modern domestic medicine. Fair to Good. Binding rubbed, joints cracked, spine chipped, but complete and unsophisticated. Marbled endpapers attractive. Text block clean and fresh, ink bold and legible, with neat tables of contents. Wax seal intact though with minor cracks. Contemporary full calf, spine gilt in compartments with red morocco label (âREMEDEâ), rubbed and worn with losses at head and tail, joints cracked but holding. Corners rounded, surface scuffed. Attractive marbled endpapers. Text block fresh, in a neat, legible cursive hand with rubricated sectioning Manuscript on paper, French, late 17thâ"early 18th century.

Folio, contemporary sprinkled calf, blind rules and decorations, red morocco spine label, gilt lettering "State / Tracts / Vol. / I" 28 tracts on English affairs during the reign of Charles II, written mostly as anonymous pamphlets during the decade 1671-1681 and compiled here as an act of preservation "for the so…le use of some particular Gentlemen, who set an extraordinary value and estimate upon them." Politics and life under Charles II are the primary subjects, with an emphasis on anti-Catholicism, including poet Andrew Marvell's An Account of the Growth of Popery, first published in Amsterdam in 1677. There was a second volume in 1692, and both volumes were reprinted together in 1693. See ESTC R17906 and R28848. From the library of prominent Englishman of the era, John Evelyn (1620-1706), with the later JE bookplate on the front paste-down and contemporary ink manuscript shelf mark. Evelyn Library Part III, Christie, Manson & Woods, March 16, 1978, lot 1414; sold again at Sotheby's London December 3, 1979, lot 35. A foolish modern owner has clumsily written in ink on the front free endpaper "Sotheby-London December 3, 1979, Lot 35 - 1 of 4, all for . . . " The amount paid has been excised. Edges rubbed with some loss at the end and foot of the spine; hinges starting, but sound; some spotting and small stains; very good copy. ESTC R10117; Wing S5329; NCBEL I, 1223 (A. Marvell).

The cover title is "GOLD MINING IN CALIFORNIA." This copy, distributed (and/or sponsored or compiled by) the Risdon Iron and Locomotive Works, has their name printed on the fro…nt cover and their advertisement printed on a sheet affixed to the front paste-down. San Francisco's Risdon Iron and Locomotive Works (1868-1911) was a major Pacific Coast builder of mining machinery. This comprehensive account of the California gold mining industry was produced to stimulate capital investment during a period when California's "interests and industries" were "depressed and languishing" to increase gold production "from fourteen or fifteen million dollars per annum" to "thirty-five or forty millions, . [so] three times as many men as are now engaged in our gold fields, could then find profitable employment there" (preface, page 5). The work draws "freely on the columns of the MINING AND SCIENTIFIC PRESS, and on several reports of the State Mineralogist of California . [as well as] the newspaper press of both the city and State at large." Cowan (1933), p. 240. Cloth worn at spine ends and corners, some rubbing and spotting, scattered mild foxing to text pages, a very good copy. An important work on California's mining industry. Quite scarce. (#168950).

Add to basketCondition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket Issued. A substantial and visually engaging vernacular photograph album documenting travel and social life across Northern California during the early 1930s, with sequences centered on Lake Tahoe, Donner Lake, and the San Francisco Bay region. The album presents a cohes…ive narrative of middle-class leisure and mobility in prewar California, combining scenic travel imagery with informal portraiture and group activity. Captioned photographs identify locations, companions, and events, creating a personal yet regionally grounded record of the period. Of particular interest is a series labeled 'German Club Picnic on Goat [Yerba Buena] Island,' depicting a social gathering in San Francisco Bay during the construction phase of the Bay Bridge. Several images appear to show the island tunnel and structural approach work, capturing a transitional moment in the development of West Coast infrastructure. DETAILS: +++ Title: 1930s Northern California Photograph Album +++ Compiler: Anonymous +++ Date: c. 1930?1937 +++ Origin: California +++ Format: Oblong string-tied photograph album CONTENT HIGHLIGHTS: +++ Approximately 180?200 black-and-white photographs, most captioned in white ink +++ Travel sequences including Lake Tahoe, Donner Lake, and Sierra landscapes +++ Social group imagery, including picnics, horseback riding, and recreational outings +++ Bay Area content including Yerba Buena Island and early Bay Bridge construction views +++ Civic and parade scenes, including uniformed formations and public gatherings +++ Informal portraits with identified individuals and named companions PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Black patterned boards, oblong format, string-tied binding. Photographs primarily small-format snapshots, corner-mounted on black leaves. Several photographs laid in; a small number of images now absent from mounts. CONDITION: Very Good. Bindings are secure with string-tie intact; moderate edge wear and a small closed tear to the lower front cover. Pages stable. Photographs generally well-preserved with typical tonal variation. Several images detached or laid in; a small number of empty mounts present. HISTORICL CONTEXT ? Compiled during a period of expanding automobile travel and regional tourism, the album reflects the growing accessibility of Northern California?s scenic destinations in the interwar years. Locations such as Lake Tahoe and Donner Lake were increasingly popular as leisure destinations, while the San Francisco Bay Area was undergoing rapid transformation. The inclusion of images associated with Yerba Buena Island during the construction of the San Francisco?Oakland Bay Bridge (1933?1936) places the album within a moment of significant infrastructural change. At the same time, references to organized social gatherings such as the 'German Club Picnic' suggest the continued role of cultural and community organizations in shaping leisure and identity during the period. Subjects: vernacular photography, California history, Northern California travel, Lake Tahoe, Donner Lake, Bay Bridge construction, social history, 1930s Americana, photograph albums.
