Probably the best North Wales topographical plate book In contemporary worn half calf, over worn marbled boards, corners & edges a little bumped & worn. Spine, raised bands, gilt tooling, titles in gilt to red calf label, cracked along upper joint. Internally, title, dedication & preface leaves followed by thirty hand coloured plates each with a leaf of descriptive text (printed both sides and in 2 columns), not paginated, plates dated 1815 or 1816, & some watermarked Whatman 1811/1814/1817, bookplate to fpd (WB Dukes), occasional spot mainly to blanks, upper hinge going held by ties Drawn by T. Compton. Engraved by I. Baily, Daniel Havell, or T. Cartwright. A lovely example, with clean plates, depicting wonderful views. (oblong, 329*241 mm). (Tooley 155. Bobins 632. Not listed at Prideaux).

The SECOND edition in contemporary full green morocco (by J. Wright), elaborate gilt tooling, gilt armorial image to upper board. Spine, rubbed, raised bands, attractive gilt tooling & titles. Internally, coloured frontis, [4], followed by 39 pls (coloured & with guards), each with a leaf of descriptive text, not paginated, plates dated 1816-1821, gilt board edges and turn-ins, marbled endpapers, a.e.g. Each plate displays bright crisp colour with no foxing. A beautiful book with only minor rubbing to edges, armorial bookplate to fpd (Frederick Cass). The 1st edition had only 20 plates whilst this, the 2nd has 39, and has a new title and plates. Describing the scenery and general characters of that romantic country, embellished with a series of highly finished coloured views engraved from original drawings by Turner, Compton, Robson, Gandy, Nicholson, Girtin, De Wint, Fielding and Proust., An excellent Example.
