Rare pièce de théâtre du vieux Roederer alors qu'il était tombé en disgrace (Sous la Restauration, Roederer fut exclu de l'Académie française en 1816 et devint maire de La Ferté-sous-Jouarre en avril 1816) la restauraion venue. La pièce brode sur un évenement de l'histoire de France quand les bourguignons et les armagnacs se déchiraient sous Charles VI à propos d'un supposé Dauphin.

Cet Avocat et conseiller au parlement de Metz, fut député aux Etats Généraux, puis ministre des Finances de Joseph Bonaparte à Naples en 1806, et conseiller d'État et sénateur sous l'Empire. Ami des philosophes et professeur d'économie politique, il rédigea cette histoire de l'hôtel de Rambouillet sous le titre de "Mémoire pour servir l'histoire de la société polie en France". C'est une histoire de la bonne société du XVIIe siècle. Selon lui Mme de Rambouillet aurait refondé la société polie en France. Ce livre eut une influence considérable, en particulier auprès de Sainte-Beuve et Victor Cousin, car il remettait le XVIIe siècle à l'honneur, et montrait l'importance sociale de la conversation et le rôle qui jouent les femmes.
