A newspaper man is called to the lower Mississippi country by an old friend of his New York days. Within a few hours he is enmeshed in a tangle of forces and human fears, some of the threads of which trace back to the steaming valley of the Congo, while others stretch toward Park Avenue, and some involve the hard suspicions of a rural community. There is a level-headed sheriff, quaint negro characters, the brooding heat of the old South, and a flash of those river gypsies whom Mark Twain knew so well. Signed by Author(s).
