In handsome, early nineteenth-century calf with gilt-tooled spine. Janus Cornarius (1500-1558) was a gifted humanist scholar who edited and translated classical medical works, particularly on pharmacology. Erasmus addressed him as 'ornatissime Cornari' ('oh-so-refined Cornarius') and extolled his translation of Hippocrates: 'The genius is there; the erudition is there, the vigorous body and vital spirit are there; in sum, nothing is missing that was required for this assignment, confronted happily, it would seem, despite its difficulty'.

The Rothamsted library copy of an early edition of the first complete Latin translation, by Saxon humanist Janus Cornarius (c. 1500-1558), of the Geoponica: the only extant Byzantine agricultural treatise, first published in 1538. A twenty-book compendium of agricultural lore, the Geoponica was compiled in the tenth-century at Constantinople during the Macedonian Renaissance and dedicated to emperor Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus. The anonymous work is often erroneously ascribed to seventh-century author Cassianus Bassus, whose collection, also titled Geoponica (itself derived from a fourth- century text by agricultural compiler Vindonius Anatolius), was integrated into the extant work. The primary sources for the text include Pliny's Naturalis Historia, the now lost writings of various Hellenistic and Graeco-Roman agriculture and veterinary authors, Carthaginian agronomist Mago, and works purporting to originate with Persian prophet Zoroaster. The Geoponica embraces all manner of 'agricultural' information, inter alia, celestial and terrestrial omina, viticulture, oleoculture, apiculture, veterinary medicine, and the construction of fish ponds. Seconde édition latine (la première parut en 1543, chez Winter également), donnée par Janus Cornarius, de l'?uvre maîtresse d'Épiphane. Le Panarion, ou "Boîte à remèdes" contre toutes les hérésies, a été écrit entre 374 et 377, alors qu'Épiphane était évêque de Constantia, l'ancienne Salamine de Chypre. Cet énorme ouvrage est le traité le plus long que nous ait laissé la littérature hérésiologique ancienne. Il est aussi le plus important à tous égards, autant par les documents qu'il cite que par les renseignements de tous ordres qu'il transmet. Épiphane passe en revue quatre-vingts hérésies très différentes les unes des autres et d'inégale importance, dont vingt précèdent le Christ. Chacune fait l'objet d'une notice où, après avoir exposé la doctrine de l'hérésie afin de la dénoncer, Épiphane présente une réfutation destinée à en détourner les fidèles. Le Panarion est donc à la fois un exposé des doctrines hérétiques fait par un polémiste et une présentation de l'orthodoxie du IVe siècle très précieuse, pour l'histoire des dogmes, faite par un évêque. Cachet d'une bibliothèque conventuelle sur la page de titre, ainsi que deux ex-libris manuscrits anciens : bibliothèque de l'Abbaye de Gengenbach et Cornelius Edelsberger. Ce dernier est probablement l'auteur des quelques annotations manuscrites disséminées dans le volume. Petite galerie de vers en marge inférieure des quatre premiers et des trois derniers feuillets, sans atteinte au texte, minimes rousseurs ou brunissures, mais bon exemplaire. 1545.

Avec la Marque de l'imprimeur Antoine Vincent gravée sur bois et des Lettrines gravées sur bois. Sig. |-|||||8, a-z, A-O8, P4, Q-Y8, Aa-Yy8, (Yy8 le dernier feuillet réglé est un feuillet blanc). Reliure abimée avec manque de cuir sur le dos les coupes et les coins, des annotations manuscrites par endroits dans les marges et sur la page de titre, rares manques de papier, petites taches et cernes dans les marges, galeries de ver marginales en début et fin de volume (sans atteinte au texte). Rare impression lyonnaise réalisée par FRADIN pour Antoine VINCENT; Janus Cornarius (Johann Hainpol ou Hagenbut), ami d'Erasme, professeur de Médecine qui donna plusieurs traductions d'Hippocrate. Marque d'Antoine Vincent : avant-bras et main sortant d'un nuage, entourés d'un serpent se mordant la queue. La main tient un sceptre fleuri et deux rameaux en rinceaux, mention à gauche du sceptre « Vin / cin / ti. ».
