Cloth. Condition: Very Good. A very scarce collection of short stories, headed by Julia Corner's "Hereward the Brave" and delightfully illustrated throughout. Very scarce. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Illustrated with a colour frontispiece, twelve monochrome plates and further examples in the text. Undated, dated from copies held by the Victoria and Albert Museum Libraries and Trinity College Dublin Library and from the contemporary inscription to the front paste down, dated 1883. A lovely collection of short stories, including "Hereward the brave" by Julia Corner, "Purples and Blues" by Emily Taylor, "Sea-shell island" by G.E. Sargent, "The pedlar's hoard" by Mark Lemon, "Which was the bravest?" by L.A. Hall, and "Mamma Milly" by Mrs. S.C. Hall. The titles are all connected by historical and moral themes and presumably aimed at children. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Contemporary inscription to the front paste down, dated 1883. Externally, smart with slight bumping and rubbing, resulting in minor loss of cloth, particularly to the spine head and tail and front joint, with light marking to the boards. Internally, generally firmly bound, with slight periodical weakness, more common to the bindings between stories and especially delicate to the hinges and to "Purples and Blues". A small mark towards the top edge of the first eighteen pages, otherwise a bright and clean copy, subtly age toned with occasional spotting. Very Good. Not Stated (illustrator). book.
