A good, clean, little used (several signatures uncut) original hardcover with moderate shelf wear and fore-tips worn to board, fraying started at the ends of backstrip and light soiling to backstrip, a 2" split to the cloth at the fore-edge; internally very good with hinges and binding solid, paper clean and lightly yellowed, with an inscription from a previous owner with date 1926 on the front endpaper.

An early but undated edition, estimated circa 1920. 372pp, plus publisher's adverts at rear, monochrome plate frontispiece and one further monochrome plate; coloured title page printed in blue and red. Illustrated green cloth-covered boards with deep green lettering front and spine. 8vo. Cloth is worn and faded, rubbed and rounded at corners and spine ends, a little discoloured on edges and folds. Text block edges and endpapers tanned, internally some light signs of fingering. An early copy (not a first edition) of George Eliel Sargent's (1808 or 09-1883) adventure story for boys, reputed to be the first story about the Australian gold fields to appear in print when first published.
