Rispetto ad altre situazioni di degrado, come l'alluvione in Valtellina o le zone terremotate, le aree ad alto rischio ambientale procurato da attività industriali si distribuiscono in tutto il territorio nazionale, soprattutto nelle fasce costiere, e coinvolgono una quantità assai rilevante di popolazione.
