Lo que de excepcional tuvo aquel curso fue, en primer lugar, que representó la última visión expresada… y hecha pública por el propio Coseriu de uno de los temas a los que mayor atención prestó en su magna obra lingüística, siendo él, sin duda, el mayor semantista que ha tenido la lingüística moderna, hasta el punto de que, con todo rigor, puede decirse que la semántica lingüística es en lo fundamental una obra de Coseriu. Y, en segundo lugar, que todas sus conferencias fueron grabadas, por lo que el contenido de este libro constituye un discurso oral continuo trasladado fielmente a texto escrito.
