Text to one page opposite illustration. Illustrated endpapers. Tidy gift inscription dated 1943. Internally bright and clean.A charming, if slightly odd children's title published during the war, where Young Ern signs up with the army and gets into trouble when he throws two of the Colonel's wife's babies (dolls) into a pond to avoid being mocked. He later redeems himself when he saves them at the cost of injury to himself from being run over. In the end, he goes off to war, rather too cheerfully with the other boy soldiers. Perhaps the tale can be read as a comforter for young children who were watching their fathers go off to fight and could hardly be unaware of the war. A Scarce survivor of WW2.
