OCLC 949046469 Gaston Wallebrand (1884-1941) is one of the pioneers in the study of medieval linguistic theory. His edition of Siger de Courtrai's grammatical and logical writings was the first modern edition with a substantial introduction to the medieval linguistic text belonging to the so-called Modistic tradition. Wallerand succeeded in giving a remarkably informed exposition of the development of medieval grammar. Siger de Courtrai (Latin Sigerus de Cortraco , Flemish Zeger van Kortrijk ) was a grammarian and philosopher of language from the Modistes school. He was born in Kortrijk around 1283 and died in Paris in 1341. He made his career at the University of Paris. From 1310, he taught at the Sorbonne, where he became procurator in 1315. He was also dean of the chapter of the Notre-Dame de Courtrai Church from 1308 to 1323. Some of his library was bequeathed to the Sorbonne, are now in the National Library of France.

Died May 1341 in Paris (Logicmuseum) _______________________________________________________________________________________ Siger of Brabant (Sigerus, Sighier, Sigieri or Sygerius de Brabantia; c. 1240 before 10 November 1284) was a 13th-century philosopher from the southern Low Countries who was an important proponent of Averroism. Little is known about many of the details of his life. In 1266, he was attached to the Faculty of Arts in the University of Paris at the time when a riot erupted between the French and Picard "nations" of studentsa series of loosely organized fraternities. The papal legate threatened Siger with execution as the ringleader of the Picard attack on the French, but no further action was taken. In the ten years following the riot, he wrote the six works which are ascribed to him and were published under his name by Pierre Mandonnet in 1899. The titles of these treatises are: De anima intellectiva (1270) Quaestiones logicales Quaestiones naturales De aeternitate mundi Quaestio utrum haec sit vera: Homo est animal nullo homine existente Impossibilia In 1271, he was once more involved in a party struggle. The minority among the "nations" chose him as rector in opposition to the elected candidate, Aubri de Rheims. For three years the strife continued, and was probably based on the opposition between the Averroists, Siger and Pierre Dubois, and the more orthodox schoolmen. The matter was settled by the Papal Legate, Simon de Brion, afterwards Pope Martin IV. Siger retired from Paris to Liège. Siger was accused of teaching "double truth"that is, saying one thing could be true through reason, and that the opposite could be true through faith. Because Siger was a scholastic, he probably did not teach double truths but tried to find reconciliations between faith and reason. In 1277, a general condemnation of Aristotelianism included a special clause directed against Boetius of Dacia and Siger of Brabant. Again Siger and Bernier de Nivelles were summoned to appear on a charge of heresy, especially in connection with the Impossibilia, where the existence of God is discussed. It appears, however, that Siger and Boetius fled to Italy and, according to John Peckham, archbishop of Canterbury, then perished miserably. The manner of Siger's death, which occurred at Orvieto, is not known. A Brabantine chronicle says that he was stabbed by a seemingly-insane secretary (a clerico suo quasi dementi). The secretary is said to have used a pen as the murder weapon and Siger's critics claimed that, since he had done so much damage with his pen, he had deserved that kind of death. Dante, in the Paradiso (x.1346), says that Siger found "death slow in co.

Francisci de Hieronymo ; concessa S.J. ; in Festo S. Godelieve) with 10 full page wood engravings (engraver T. Brown) each opposite a subtitle page with large woodengraved border., All pages printed in red and black , in two columns, and within typographicals fillets. With pages of music scores. Missal has been in use up till the 1920's. Proof of that is an inserted printed addition of 1919. The book has been bound in 1853 or somewhat later (One addition is dated 1853, bound in at the end) Notwithstanding some very sparse foxing spots , a very good copy . BINDING Spine in contemporary red leather, raised and with gilt decoration and gilt title., covers in red velvet over wooden boards. Both covers decorated with large embossed silver roccoco ornaments, including silver border with corner pieces and 8 bosses. The frontal central cartouche figures the crowned Virgin Mary holding Jesus. The cartouche at the back represents Saint John the Evangelist. Endpapers in white satin, ,All edges chiselled and gilt. The lower silver border punched with the capilal letter B ( Brussels ?) and a double faced Janus head hallmark.The upper silver border punched with the capital letter B ( Brussels ?) and a Minerva head hallmark. Excellently preserved silver binding. According the previous owner the binding should be ascribed to the Mechelen silversmith F. Van Beveren. We have been unable to corroborate this. Fine example of a silver altar missal, in fine condition with hardly any traces of use, which is rare because these missals were in daily use during mass service in the Roman Catholic church. This missal can be considered as a sumptous highlight of the Roman Catholic church litugical books, a church which had regained strenght after the debacle of the French Revolution .

With pages of music scores. Missal has been in use up till the 1920's. Proof of that are some additions of 1927 which have been inserted. Notwithstanding some very sparse foxing spots ,some offsetting of the inserted leaves and some damaged or missing tabs (bookmarks) still a very good copy . BINDING Bound in contemporary deep red velvet over wooden boards. Both covers decorated with large embossed silver roccoco ornaments, including silver border with corner pieces and 8 bosses. The frontal central cartouche figures Saint Vincentius à Paolo with the baby child Jesus. The cartouche at the back represents Mary queen of heaven with child. Both cartouches , as the two clasps , have the hallmark of master silversmith Auguste Joseph Gavier (Courtrai- Flanders 1814 - 1863). Endpapers in white satin, ,All edges gilt. Apart from a small loss of velvet at the tail cap the binding is excellently preserved, not in the least due to the good functioning of the well designed eight bosses. Fine example of a silver altar missal, in fine condition with hardly any traces of use, which is rare because these missals were in daily use during mass service in the Roman Catholic church. This missal can be considered as a sumptous highlight of the Roman Catholic church litugical books, a church which had regained strenght after the debacle of the French Revolution .
