Add to basketPaperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book concerns an extensive geological survey of the county of Caithness, Scotland from 1907-1911, by the Geological Survey of Great Britain. As part of a larger effort to map the geology of the British Isles, the region was selected for its host of geological features and rock types. A core group of observers spent four years scrutinizing the land, focusing on a region defined by two rock groups: crystalline schists and gneisses to the west, and Old Red Sandstone, a sedimentary rock which characterizes the southern and eastern Caithness topography. The authors believed the two rock types would help them deduce the regionâs geological history. They took note of various formations, from quartzites to sandstone to conglomerates, and the geological processes that led to their presence. The authors provide a detailed log of significant geological features throughout Caithness, from fossil beds and sedimentary basins to cliffs and fault lines. The book draws comparisons to other Scottish regions, and places its findings within a broader context of the geological forces which have shaped the country over millions of years. Among the bookâs concluding points is that Caithness was once completely covered by Old Red Sandstone which has since been eroded away by glaciation and other factors. The book is a must-read for students of geology and geologists alike, providing an in-depth look at the complex geological evolution of this region of Scotland. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
