Prior to this, the Gomal Pass and Zhob Valley were unknown territory to the British due to both the aggressive and reclusive nature of the nomadic tribes that inhabited the area and the challenging terrain. The author, himself a member of the force, provides a first-hand account of the political, commercial, and military importance of the region, as well as the strategic significance of the Zhob Valley, which provided access to key trade routes and Afghan strongholds. The book summarizes earlier expeditions into the area and provides detail of the force's formation, which included infantry, cavalry, artillery, and support units. It describes the challenges of navigating the region's geography, the force's division into three columns, and the ultimate convergence on Tahnishpa, a stronghold controlled by the infamous Bungal Khan. The author provides insights into the political landscape of the region, describing the negotiations and confrontations with local tribes and the ultimate capture and destruction of Bungal Khan's stronghold. The book offers a rich description of the terrain, the challenges of resupply, and the day-to-day life of the soldiers involved in the expedition. This book provides a valuable historical account of the Zhob Field Force expedition, shedding light on the geopolitical complexities and military strategies of the era, and offering a unique glimpse into a remote and fascinating region. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Add to basketFirst edition. The brief, bloodless campaign in the Zhob Valley, North-West Frontier, was a show of force intended to quell any thought of insurrection among the Khadarzai sept of the Shirani tribe - "a campaign against Nature, rather than man" (Neville p. 118). Subsequently, "McFall had time to prepare many landscape and portrait sketches which are interspersed with his text" (Riddick). Captain (later Colonel) McFall (1862-1923), of the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (attached to the Force as Baggage Officer), supplied the illustrations, which are certainly above the common run often associated with soldierly reminiscences. The National Army Museum possesses a number of albums by him and describes these as "perhaps the most brilliant of all [visual] personal recollections [of India by a serving officer]. executed in the 1880s and 1890s with an accomplishment which suggests a professional illustrator. In fact he regularly contributed drawings to The Graphic, covering his journey to India and subsequent service on the North-West Frontier, with the Zhob Field Force in 1890 and elsewhere" (Guy & Boyden, p. 322). Provenance: Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Wells-Cole (1984-1914), with his ownership inscription on the front free endpaper, dated 4 June 1895. Commissioned in 1884, Wells-Cole served with McFall's regiment on the North-West Frontier during the Tirah Expedition (1897-8), was mentioned in despatches and received the DSO. He later saw extensive action during the Boer War and was present at some of the principal engagements. Bruce 4371; Riddick, Glimpses of India, 384. Alan J. Guy and Peter B. Boyden, eds., Soldiers of the Raj: The Indian Army 1600-1947, 1997; Captain H. L. Nevill, Campaigns on the North-West Frontier, 1912. Octavo. Additional coloured title page, coloured frontispiece (of a camp fire scene), 90 illustrations by the author (a mixture of colour, half-tone, or monochrome plates but mainly line drawings in the text); with the publisher's 24-page catalogue (dated March 1895) at the end. Original green cloth, gilt-lettered spine, dark green embossed lettering on front cover incorporating a camel's head motif in black. Binding refurbished, spine ends and corners consolidated, discolouration and a few marks to endpapers, occasional finger soiling and spotting: very good.
