Carl Siegmund Franz Credé (1819-1892), "Geburtshelfer zu Leipzig, ist 23. Dezember 1819 zu Berlin geb., studierte von 1838 an zu Berlin und Heidelberg Medizin, erwarb 1842 in Berlin den Doktorgrad, unternahm darauf eine grössere wissenschaftliche Reise, war von 1843 bis 48 Assistenzarzt in der unter Busch's Leitung stehenden Berliner geburtshilflichen Klinik, habilitierte sich 1850 als Privatdozent für Geburtshilfe an der Universität und wurde 1852 zum Direktor der Berliner Hebammenschule und zum dirigierenden Arzte der Gebärabteilung, sowie einer von ihm begründeten gynäkologischen Abteilung der Charité ernannt. Sein in diese Zeit fallendes Hauptwerk ist: "Klinische Vorträge über Geburtshilfe" (2 Bde., Berlin 1853 bis 54). Im Herbst 1856 folgte er einem Rufe als Prof. ord. der Geburtshilfe und Direktor der Entbindungsanstalt und Hebammenschule nach Leipzig, woselbst er nach seinem Amtsantritte eine geburtshilfliche und gynäkologische Poliklinik gründete und auch eine Abteilung für Frauenkrankheiten in der Gebäranstalt einrichtete. 1860 erhielt er den Titel als Hofrat, 1870 den als Geh. Medizinalrat. Crede, der am 14. März 1892 starb, gehört zu den anerkannt hervorragenden Männern seines Faches. In seiner Wissenschaft hat er sich hauptsächlich durch zwei Neuerungen einen Namen gesichert, einmal durch das bekannte, 1860 publizierte Verfahren zur Expression der Placenta und dann durch die gegenwärtig allgemein adoptierte prophylaktische Massnahme der Argentum nitricum - Einträufelung gegen Blennorrhoea neonatorum. Crede war ein ausgezeichneter Lehrer, ein tüchtiger Organisator, der sich um die Hebung des geburtshilflichen Unterrichts, sowohl in Berlin schon, wie ganz besonders später in Leipzig grosse Verdienste erworben hat. Ausser dem genannten Werke und ausser akademischen Gelegenheitsschriften veröffentlichte er eine grosse Anzahl von Abhandlungen über einzelne Gegenstände seiner Wissenschaft in den Verhandlungen der Gesellschaft für Geburtshilfe in Berlin, der Neuen Zeitschrift für Geburtskunde, der Monatsschrift für Geburtskunde und Frauenkrankheiten, im Archiv für Gynäkologie und anderen Zeitschriften. Von 1853 bis 69 redigierte er die Monatsschrift für Geburtskunde, von 1870 ab das Archiv für Gynäkologie. Das im Königreich Sachsen amtlich eingeführte, von Grenser verfasste "Lehrbuch der Hebammenkunst" wurde von ihm und Winckel (3. Aufl., Leipzig 1882) neu bearbeitet.
