Three watercolours, signed & inscribed in ink and pencil; margins sl. marked & dusted, pencil annotations a little faded. All 23 x 18.5cm, two tipped on to later pieces of card, one loose. Together with three uncoloured copies of the printed version and one hand-coloured copy of 'The Wounded Brigand Retreating'. Three wonderfully dramatic watercolours by Robert Cruikshank commissioned by the publisher Orlando Hodgson for his 'New Series' of theatrical prints published in the early to mid 1830s whilst he worked from 10 Cloth Fair. They are very much in the style of Toy Theatre prints designed by Cruikshank for Hodgson in the same period. The few examples of Hodgson's 'New Series' recorded by OCLC (none are recorded on Copac or the British Museum) have titles noting the actor and their role: 'Mr. Abbott as Romeo', 'Mrs Pope as Elwina in Chevy Chase', 'Madame Vestris as Don Giovanni', etc. Although the titles of these watercolours are less specific they are almost certainly illustrations of James Robinson Planché's play The Brigand first published in 1829. The play centres on a portrayal of the Italian Robin Hood, Alessandro Massaroni, 'one of those daring spirits that seem to have been created to correct the unequal distribution of good and evil. Chief of a lawless band infecting the mountains near Rome, his name spread terror throughout Italy'. This description of Massaroni is included as an introductory 'Remark' in the text of The Brigand published by John Cumberland. This edition includes an uncoloured frontispiece of Massaroni by Robert Cruikshank. Though much cruder, it is quite clearly the same character reproduced in far finer detail in these watercolours. Two of these designs depict the moment in which Massaroni, in a final escapade, is fatally shot as he attempts an escape from the castle of Prince Bianchi. Born in 1789, Isaac Robert Cruikshank, was the son of the artist and caricaturist Isaac Cruikshank, 1764-1811, and brother to the more celebrated George. The brothers delighted in theatre, performing in home-made dramas with their friend the actor Edmund Kean and later attending performances on every kind of stage. Robert assisted his father and brother in their studio and went on to become a caricaturist, illustrator and particularly skilful portrait artist. Together with George he drew the illustrations, and superintended the scenery for the hugely successful Adelphi Theatre production of Pierce Egan's Life in London. Like his brother, Robert was a prolific artist and he worked with numerous publishers of toy theatres producing full suites of plates alongside individually published character sketches of the famous roles and performers of the day. 3 1/2 x 4 inches, on single sheet, mounted to card backing. Offered here are two small watercolor and pen and ink drawings by Robert Cruikshank, ca. 1810-20, executed on the same piece of watercolor paper, signed Robert Cruikshank at lower right. The drawings may represent figures in an illustrated book, or a proposed one, but we have not had the opportunity to explore this possibility. Robert Cruikshank, or Isaac Robert Cruikshank formally, (1789 ñ 1856) was a caricaturist, illustrator, and portrait miniaturist, and brother of George Cruikshank, both sons of Isaac Cruikshank. Just like them, he holds importance as a pioneer in the history of early 19th Century comical illustration. Near fine.

No place (but London?): no date (ca. 1820?). 2 pp., small 4to, written in brown ink on one side and addressed on the other with a watercolor drawing by Cruikshank. ? A tantalizing letter: addressed only to ?Mr. Cumberland,? it is tempting to hope it might be George Cumberland, especially because the letter mentions a ?Mr. B,? who one would like to think might be Blake but is probably Bewick. The letter reads (in part): ?If convenient please to send me the dust . . . have you any command please to write a few lines . . . will you request Mr. B to send me some wood I have sent to him but have only one block back.? Boldly signed ?R Ck.? On the verso is written ?Mr. Cumberland? beside a charming watercolor of an exceptionally portly gentleman in a hat and an exceptionally skinny figure doffing his hat (perhaps the artist importuning his patron?). A search of Blake Records failed to locate a single reference to Robert Cruikshank but, of course, hundreds to Cumberland. A more likely possibility is John Cumberland, the publisher whose Cumberland?s Minor Theatre was illustrated by Cruikshank.
