The cover notes quote Martin Marie Charles de Boudens Vanderbourg who edited an edition of Horace in 1812, so this quote likely dates to after 1812. The complete annotated Horace by the humanist Cruquius (1520-1584) who was Latin schoolmaster at Bruges. The 'commentator vetus' (known as Commentator Cruquianus) "is a collection of scholia, published by Cruquius from various mss., notably the four codices blandinii, which were destroyed by fire in 1566 with the Benedictine abbey Blandigny near Ghent" (OCLC). "'Cruquius,' says Dr. Harwood, 'is deservedly esteemed one of the best commentators on Horace. Consult the notes in these editions on any of the difficult passages in Horace, and you will have your doubts satisfactorily solved.' Barthius and Tanaquil Faber think but slightly of Cruquius: they observe, and in this observation Mitscherlich seems to concur, that he has performed little more than the old commentators, Acro and Porphyrio. Harles thinks that Cruquius is not equal to Lambinus in research, ingenuity, and general critical knowledge: yet Baxter has not scrupled to call Lambinus, Cruquius and Torrentius, the 'tria Horatii lumina'" (Dibdin). A double-page key depicting the whole map in a reduced size is not included otherwise a complete atlas sectionalised wall-map depicting the delineation of Delft in fine original condition. Cruquius's large wall map of the Delft Region Oblong folio, (530 by 690mm), title, key sheet, and 25 engraved maps, lacking two title plates, half-calf over brown marbled paper boards. Beautifully engraved map, a reduced from of the wall map, of 't Hooge Heemraedschap van Delfland prepared by Nicolaas and Jacob Kruikius. Decorated with the Delfland coat of arms supported by 2 allegorical figures in its centre: 10 large coats of arms of the water district officials down the left and right sides, an elaborate compass rose (north above right): and pastoral scenes. It shows every city, town and village.The compass rose is remarkable, with a globe at its centre showing Africa, Europe and parts of Asia and South America: with gods representing the sun, moon and planets in the other seven: and a celestial map with figures representing signs of the zodiac between the points.The Delfland dike and water authorities commissioned the surveyors Nicolaas (1678-1754) and Jacob Kruikius (1684-1706) to produce the present map in 1701, and they devoted more than a decade to the task. By the mid-century only one of the original dike and water authorities remained in office. ROTTERDAM HILLEGERSBERG, BERKEL-RODENRIJS, ACKERDIJKSE PLASSEN Vierentwintichste Stuk en Vyfentwintichste Stuk uit de kaart van Delfland, met daarop de Ackerdijkse plassen, Hillegersberg en Berkel-Rodenrijs. Afmetingen: elk ca. 51 x 58 cm. Deze kaarten vormden onderdeel van de als atlas gebonden kaart "'t Hoogheemraedschap van Delflant: met alle de Steden . etc. daer in Gelegen, op Voetmaet / volgens Ordre van de Wel Eedele Heeren Dijkgraef en Hooge Heemraeden van Delflant, Gemeten en in Kaerte gebracht Door (de Geadmitteerde Landmeters) Nicol. en Jac. Krukius (Cruquius)." De kaart werd uitgegeven in 1712. Het vervaardigen van de kaart duurde vele jaren en kostte toen 20.000 gulden (!!). De topografie is perfect weergegeven, ook de door het slagturven in die tijd ontstane legakkers en veenplassen (die naderhand veelal weer werden drooggelegd). Deze kopergravures van Hillegersberg en Berkel-Rodenrijs zijn in de tijd prachtig met de hand gekleurd en met goud gehoogd. De gebonden fraai gekleurde exemplaren van de kaart van Delfland waren bedoeld als relatiegeschenken. Volgens Fockema Andrea & Koeman in Old maps and their makers (1975) is dit "the most beautiful map of Delfland, the Krukius map is stunning"'. Nicolaes Samuel Kruik (1678-1754), alias Cruquius, werd bekend als waterbouwkundige en cartograaf. Hij was landmeter en bracht het tot kandidaat in de medicijnen. Behalve het vervaardigen van de beroemde kaart van Delfland was hij in 1733 belast met het toezicht op de uitwateringswerken van Rijnland. Tevens had hij een belangrijk aandeel in de rivierverbetering van Rijnland. Met anderen deed hij voorstellen voor de droogmaking van de Haarlemmermeer en de drooggraving van Hoek van Holland. Na de overstromingen van de Merwede in 1726 bracht hij uitvoerig rapport uit met voorstellen tot verbetering van de rivier. Drie jaar later vervaardigd Cruquius een kaart van de Merwede die geldt als eerste rivierkaart met dieptelijnen ter wereld. Ook verwierf Cruquius bekendheid met zijn temperatuurmetingen, die bij historisch weeronderzoek nog steeds worden gebruikt. Literatuur: Donkersloot-de Vrij p. 159 nr. 806.
